The Municipality of Tiros is situated at the
middle of the district Kynouria in the county
of Arcadia. It is washed by Mertoon Sea, on
the east, and it borders with Northern Kynouria
and Leonidio municipalities. It is 30 kms far
away from Astros and 20 kms from Leonidio.
To reach this region we have to follow the
Athens - Tripoli National Road till Argos and
then the provincial road to Leonidio. The stage
is one of the more fascinating ones in Greece,
because the road follows the coastline on a
high well above the sea level, offering by that
way a spectacular view of Argolic and the other
numerous bays. The drive lasts for about 3 hours
from Athens.
The municipality consists of three settlements:
Tiros, Sapounakeyka and Pera Melana; it has
2.104 inhabitants and it is 88.567.000,00 m2
in extent.
The municipality area is the heart of Tsakonia,
a region characterized by an intense and uninterrupted
continuity through the ages, as we can verify
with the human presence, that is pre-Hellenic
tribes that later have been influenced by the
Dorians and have been there at least from the
Neolithic ages.
There is evidence as we can see in the remains
of Bronze Age installations of Palaiochora,
in the ancient fortified settlement on the hill
of Castro and in the remains of a small temple
of 6th century b. C., dedicated for the worship
of Apollo Tyritas, on the hill of Prophet Elias
at Melana.
The main occupation of the population is agriculture;
they produce an excellent olive oil and citrus
fruits of a unique quality, too. There is also
a cultivation occurred rarely in Greece nowadays,
that is the growth of locus beans used actually
in pastry making. The honey of the region is
excellent, whilst the fishing activities provide
the area with fresh and tasty fishes.
